Workhuman® and Gallup released their latest report, “From Appreciation to Equity: How Recognition Reinforces DEI in the Workplace,” which outlines how recognition, when done authentically and frequently, can help to build more equitable and inclusive workplaces that allow employees to thrive. In the study, derived from two surveys of over 10,000 working adults, Workhuman and Gallup found that when employees believe that the recognition they receive is authentic, they are five times more likely to feel like they belong in their workplace. This pattern is even stronger for Black and Hispanic employees with both being seven times more likely to feel a sense of belonging at work. When it comes to women at work — in particular, women in management — recognition can act as a shield to feeling burned out on the job.

In a large-scale analysis across hundreds of organizations and thousands of teams, Workhuman and Gallup found employees with high wellbeing are more likely to be told they are top performers, feel like their pay is fair, and are less likely to be actively looking for job opportunities. In contrast, those with low wellbeing admit they are less likely to be considered a top performer, less likely to feel their paychecks are fair, and are more likely to be actively searching for another job.

Two years ago, a global pandemic turned nearly every universal truth about work on its head, with many in-office industries shifting overnight to a work-from-home (WFH) model. In fact, according to Workhuman’s research report, Two Years into COVID: The State of Human Connection at Work, most industries, including those with traditionally on-site jobs, have adjusted work environments to include more remote work, either hybrid or fully WFH. But not everyone feels confident about the adjustment. Compared to on-site workers, fully remote workers were less likely to say they feel confident (20% vs. 27%) and more likely to feel uneasy about change (38% vs. 27%).

Psychological safety describes the feeling of being one’s whole self at work, taking risks and being vulnerable, without fear of negative consequences. A recent Workhuman survey of more than 3,000 U.S. workers found that only 26% felt psychologically safe during the pandemic and experienced higher levels of burnout, stress, and greater feelings of being lonely. The survey further revealed men experienced higher psychological safety than women, white employees experienced higher psychological safety than other ethnic groups, and working parents had the lowest psychological safety in comparison to employees who are not parents. According to a Gallup report, organizations that move towards creating psychological safety for its employees see a 30% reduction in turnover, 40% reduction in safety incidents and a 12% increase in productivity.
