Goodwill Caravan - a UK-based nonprofit supporting displaced people seeking refuge in Egypt - has launched an appeal for donations for the Salaam Centre in Cairo.

-- Following the launch, the charity will be accepting one-off or monthly donations from individuals wishing to help refugees from Gaza and Sudan. Goodwill Caravan assists thousands of displaced individuals through its network of food, education, housing, and mental health support services.

The organisation highlights how vulnerable these refugees are as they arrive in an unfamiliar place. Without appropriate support, it becomes impossible for families to navigate the complex asylum application process while trying to deal with the trauma of their experiences in their homelands.
According to the Goodwill Caravan website, an estimated 100,000 Palestinians have fled to Egypt since October 2023 to escape escalating Israeli attacks in Gaza. An even larger number of Sudanese people - approximately 300,000 - have made the same journey to Egypt since the outbreak of the conflict there in April 2023.
The charity is supporting these people as they attempt to rebuild their lives in a new country. A spokesperson explains, “Our dedicated team in Egypt is on the ground and ready to help. Our mission is to help Sudanese and Palestinian Refugees in Egypt integrate into society so that they may have hope of building a better life for themselves.”
Goodwill Caravan assists refugee families with school enrollments for their children, opening bank accounts, and sourcing employment opportunities. To assist with finding jobs, the organisation provides access to language classes and vocational training.
“We empower vulnerable populations by giving them the skills they will need to become fully functional members of their new societies,” the spokesperson adds. “In doing so, we aim to alleviate the burden on already overstretched public services.”
There is also an urgent need for medical assistance, food supplies, shelter, and legal support, making donations essential to keep asylum seekers safe and healthy in their new homes.
In addition, the organisation is committed to protecting these vulnerable groups from the threat of trafficking.
According to the Goodwill Caravan website, “We focus particularly on refugee families, orphans, and detained and unaccompanied children, who are at the highest risk of trafficking and kidnappings, including for the organ trade.”
Suggested one-off donations start at £50, which provides emergency legal aid for a family of four. A £150 donation secures psychosocial sessions for a child, while a £1200 contribution covers rent and food costs for a family for one year.
